ETHERNET SERIAL INTERFACE

The 82C501AD Ethernet Serial Interface (ESI) chip is designed to work directly with Intel LAN Controllers (82586, 82590, and 82596) in IEEE 802.3 (10BASE5 and 10BASE5), 10-Mb/s, Local Area Network applications. The major functions of the 82C501AD are to generate the 10-MHz transmit clock for the Intel LAN Controller, perform Manchester encoding/decoding of the transmitted/received frames, and provide the electrical interface to the Ethernet transceiver cable (AUI). Diagnostic loopback control enables the 82C501AD to route the signal to ge transmitted from the Intel LAN Controller through its Manchester encoding and decoding circuitry and back to the Intel LAN Controller.
