Presentdayapplicationsrequirethattheirmicrocontrollershavehighperformancebutoftenstill

demandthattheyconsumeaslittlepoweraspossible,conflictingrequirementsthatareespecially

trueinbatterypoweredportableapplications.Thefastclocksrequiredforhighperformancewill

bytheirnatureincreasecurrentconsumptionandofcourseviceversa,lowerspeedclocksreduce

currentconsumption.AsHoltekhasprovidedthisdevicewithbothhighandlowspeedclock

sourcesandthemeanstoswitchbetweenthemdynamically,theusercanoptimisetheoperationof

theirmicrocontrollertoachievethebestperformance/powerratio.

System Clocks

ThedevicehasmanydifferentclocksourcesforboththeCPUandperipheralfunctionoperation.

Byprovidingtheuserwithawiderangeofclockoptionsusingconfigurationoptionsandregister

programming,aclocksystemcanbeconfiguredtoobtainmaximumapplicationperformance.

Themainsystemclock,cancomefromeitherahighfrequencyfHorlowfrequencyfSUBsource,

andisselectedusingtheHLCLKbitandCKS2~CKS0bitsintheSMODregister.Thehighspeed

systemclockcanbesourcedfromeitheranHXTorHIRCoscillator,selectedviaaconfiguration

option.ThelowspeedsystemclocksourcecanbesourcedfrominternalclockfSUB.IffSUBisselected

thenitcanbesourcedbytheLIRCoscillator.Theotherchoice,whichisadividedversionofthe

highspeedsystemoscillatorhasarangeoffH/2~fH/64.

ThefSUBclockisusedtoprovideasubstituteclockforthemicrocontrollerjustafterawake-uphas

occurredtoenablefasterwake-uptimes.ThefSUBisusedasaclocksourcefortheWatchdogtimer,

theTimeBaseinterrupt,theTMs,andtheLCDfunctions.
