Programming Considerations

Withintheuserprogram,oneofthefirstthingstoconsiderisportinitialisation.Afterareset,allof

theI/Odataandportcontrolregisterswillbesethigh.ThismeansthatallI/Opinswilldefaultto

aninputstate,thelevelofwhichdependsontheotherconnectedcircuitryandwhetherpull-high

selectionshavebeenchosen.Iftheportcontrolregisters,PAC~PFC,arethenprogrammedtosetup

somepinsasoutputs,theseoutputpinswillhaveaninitialhighoutputvalueunlesstheassociated

portdataregisters,PA~PF,arefirstprogrammed.Selectingwhichpinsareinputsandwhichare

outputscanbeachievedbyte-widebyloadingthecorrectvaluesintotheappropriateportcontrol

registerorbyprogrammingindividualbitsintheportcontrolregisterusingthe“SET[m].i”and

“CLR[m].i”instructions.Notethatwhenusingthesebitcontrolinstructions,aread-modify-write

operationtakesplace.Themicrocontrollermustfirstreadinthedataontheentireport,modifyitto

therequirednewbitvaluesandthenrewritethisdatabacktotheoutputports.

Thepower-onresetconditionoftheA/DconvertercontrolregistersensuresthatanyA/Dinput

pins,whicharealwayssharedwithotherI/Ofunctions,willbesetupasanaloginputsafterareset.

AlthoughthesepinswillbeconfiguredasA/Dinputsafterareset,theA/Dconverterwillnotbe

switchedon.ItisthereforeimportanttonotethatifitisrequiredtousethesepinsasI/Odigital

inputpinsorasotherfunctions,theA/Dconvertercontrolregistersmustbecorrectlyprogrammed

toremovetheA/Dfunction.NotealsothatastheA/Dchannelisenabled,anyinternalpull-high

resistorconnectionswillberemoved.

PortAhastheadditionalcapabilityofprovidingwake-upfunctions.Whenthedeviceisinthe

SLEEPorIDLEMode,variousmethodsareavailabletowakethedeviceup.Oneoftheseisahigh

tolowtransitionofanyofthePortApins.SingleormultiplepinsonPortAcanbesetuptohavethis

function.
