Watchdog Timer Operation TheWatchdogTimeroperatesbyprovidingadeviceresetwhenitstimeroverflows.Thismeans thatintheapplicationprogramandduringnormaloperationtheuserhastostrategicallyclearthe WatchdogTimerbeforeitoverflowstopreventtheWatchdogTimerfromexecutingareset.Thisis doneusingtheclearwatchdoginstructions.Iftheprogrammalfunctionsforwhateverreason,jumps toanunknownlocation,orentersanendlessloop,theseclearinstructionswillnotbeexecutedinthe correctmanner,inwhichcasetheWatchdogTimerwilloverflowandresetthedevice.Withregardto theWatchdogTimerenable/disablefunction,therearefivebits,WE4~WE0,intheWDTCregister toofferadditionalenable/disableandresetcontroloftheWatchdogTimer.IftheWDTconfiguration optionhasselectedthattheWDTfunctionisalwaysenabled,thenWE4~WE0bitsstillhaveeffect ontheWDTfunction.WhentheWE4~WE0bitsvalueareequalto01010Bor10101B,theWDT functionisenabled.However,iftheWE4~WE0bitsarechangedtoanyothervaluesexcept01010B and10101B,whichcouldbecausedbyadverseenvironmentalconditionssuchasnoise,itwillreset themicrocontrollerafter2~3LIRCclockcycles.IftheWDTconfigurationoptionhasselectedthat theWDTfunctioniscontrolledusingtheapplicationprogram,thentheWDTcontrolregisterbits, WE4~WE0,areusedtoenableordisabletheWatchdogTimer.InthiscasetheWDTfunctionwillbe disabledwhentheWE4~WE0bitsareequalto10101BandenablediftheWE4~WE0bitsareequal to01010B.IftheWE4~WE0bitsaresettoanyothervalues,otherthan01010Band10101B,itwill resetthedeviceafter2~3LIRCclockcycles.Afterpoweronthesebitswillhaveavalueof01010B.
