EachI/OporthasitsowncontrolregisterknownasPAC,tocontroltheinput/outputconfiguration.
Withthiscontrolregister,eachCMOSoutputorinputcanbereconfigureddynamicallyunder
softwarecontrol.EachpinoftheI/Oportsisdirectlymappedtoabitinitsassociatedportcontrol
register.FortheI/Opintofunctionasaninput,thecorrespondingbitofthecontrolregistermust
bewrittenasa"1".Thiswillthenallowthelogicstateoftheinputpintobedirectlyreadby
instructions.Whenthecorrespondingbitofthecontrolregisteriswrittenasa"0",theI/Opinwill
besetupasaCMOSoutput.Ifthepiniscurrentlysetupasanoutput,instructionscanstillbeused
toreadtheoutputregister.However,itshouldbenotedthattheprogramwillinfactonlyreadthe
statusoftheoutputdatalatchandnottheactuallogicstatusoftheoutputpin.

Pin-shared Functions
Theflexibilityofthemicrocontrollerrangeisgreatlyenhancedbytheuseofpinsthathavemorethanone
function.Limitednumbersofpinscanforceseriousdesignconstraintsondesignersbutbysupplyingpins
withmulti-functions,manyofthesedifficultiescanbeovercome.Forthesepins,thedesiredfunctionof
themulti-functionI/Opinsisselectedbyaseriesofregistersviatheapplicationprogramcontrol.
Pin-shared Function Selection Registers
Thelimitednumberofsuppliedpinsinapackagecanimposerestrictionsontheamountoffunctions
acertaindevicecancontain.Howeverbyallowingthesamepinstoshareseveraldifferentfunctions
andprovidingameansoffunctionselection,awiderangeofdifferentfunctionscanbeincorporated
intoevenrelativelysmallpackagesizes.ThedeviceincludesPort"A"pinsharedfunctionselection
registers,labeledasPASn,andinputfunctionselectionregister,labeledasIFS,whichcanselectthe
desiredfunctionsofthemulti-functionpin-sharedpins.
Whenthepin-sharedinputfunctionisselectedtobeused,thecorrespondinginputandoutput
functionsselectionshouldbeproperlymanaged.Forexample,ifthecascadingtransceiverinterface
isused,thecorrespondingpin-sharedfunctionshouldbeconfiguredasthecascadingtransceiver
interfacefunctionbyconfiguringthePAS0registerandthecascadingtransceiverinterfacesignal
inputpinshouldbeproperlyselectedusingtheIFSregister.Iftheexternalinterruptfunctionis
selectedtobeused,therelevantpin-sharedfunctionshouldbeselectedasanI/Ofunctionandthe
interruptinputsignalactiveedgeshouldbeselected.
