I2C Interface

TheI2Cbusisabidirectional2-linecommunicationinterfaceoriginallydevelopedbyPhilips.

Thepossibilityoftransmittingandreceivingdataononly2linesoffersmanynewapplication

possibilitiesformicrocontrollerbasedapplications.

I2C Interface Operation

AstheI2Cinterfacepinsarepin-sharedwithsegmentpinsandwiththeSPIfunctionpins,theI2C

interfacemustfirstbeenabledbyselectingthecorrectconfigurationoption.

TherearetwolinesassociatedwiththeI2Cbus,thefirstisknownasSDAandistheSerialDataline,

thesecondisknownasSCLlineandistheSerialClockline.Asmanydevicesmaybeconnected

togetheronthesamebus,theiroutputsarebothopendraintypes.Forthisreasonitisnecessarythat

externalpull-highresistorsareconnectedtotheseoutputs.Notethatnochipselectlineexists,as

eachdeviceontheI2Cbusisidentifiedbyauniqueaddresswhichwillbetransmittedandreceived

ontheI2Cbus.

WhentwodevicescommunicatewitheachotheronthebidirectionalI2Cbus,oneisknownasthe

masterdeviceandoneastheslavedevice.Bothmasterandslavecantransmitandreceivedata,

however,itisthemasterdevicethathasoverallcontrolofthebus.Forthisdevice,whichonly

operatesinslavemode,therearetwomethodsoftransferringdataontheI2Cbus,theslavetransmit

modeandtheslavereceivemode.

I2C Registers

TherearethreecontrolregistersassociatedwiththeI2Cbus,SIMC0A/B,SIMC1A/BandSIMARA/

Bandonedataregister,SIMDRA/B.

TheSIMDRA/BregisterisusedtostorethedatabeingtransmittedandreceivedontheI2Cbus.

BeforethemicrocontrollerwritesdatatotheI2Cbus,theactualdatatobetransmittedmustbe

placedintheSIMDRA/Bregister.AfterthedataisreceivedfromtheI2Cbus,themicrocontroller

canreaditfromtheSIMDRA/Bregister.AnytransmissionofdatatotheI2Cbusorreceptionofdata

fromtheI2CbusmustbemadeviatheSIMDRA/Bregister.

TheSIMARA/Bregisteristhelocationwheretheslaveaddressofthemicrocontrollerisstored.Bits

1~7oftheSIMARA/Bregisterdefinethemicrocontrollerslaveaddress.Bit0isnotdefined.When

amasterdevice,whichisconnectedtotheI2Cbus,sendsoutanaddress,whichmatchestheslave

addressintheSIMARA/Bregister,themicrocontrollerslavedevicewillbeselected.

NotethattheSIMARA/BregisteristhesameregisterasSIMC2A/BwhichisusedbytheSPI

interface.
