Oneofthemostfundamentalfunctionsinanymicrocontrollerdeviceistheabilitytocontroland

measuretime.ToimplementtimerelatedfunctionseachdeviceincludesseveralTimerModules,

abbreviatedtothenameTM.TheTMsaremulti-purposetimingunitsandservetoprovide

operationssuchasTimer/Counter,CompareMatchOutputaswellasbeingthefunctionalunitfor

thegenerationofPWMsignals.EachoftheTMshastwoindividualinterrupts.Theadditionof

inputandoutputpinsforeachTMensuresthatusersareprovidedwithtimingunitswithawideand

flexiblerangeoffeatures.

Introduction

ThedevicescontaintwoTMswitheachTMhavingareferencenameofTM0andTM1.Each

individualTMcanbecategorisedasacertaintype,namelyCompactTypeTM,socalledCTM.The

mainfeaturesoftheTMsaresummarisedintheaccompanyingtable.

TM Function Summary

TM Operation

ThesetwoTMsofferarangeoffunctions,fromsimpletimingoperationstoPWMsignalgeneration.

ThekeytounderstandinghowtheTMoperatesistoseeitintermsofafreerunningcounterwhose

valueisthencomparedwiththevalueofpre-programmedinternalcomparators.Whenthefree

runningcounterhasthesamevalueasthepre-programmedcomparator,knownasacomparematch

situation,aTMinterruptsignalwillbegeneratedwhichcanclearthecounterandperhapsalso

changetheconditionoftheTMoutputpin.TheinternalTMcounterisdrivenbyauserselectable

clocksource,whichcanbeaninternalclockoranexternalpin.

TM Clock Source

TheclocksourcewhichdrivesthemaincounterineachTMcanoriginatefromvarioussources.The

selectionoftherequiredclocksourceisimplementedusingtheTnCK2~TnCK0bitsintheTMcontrol

registers.TheclocksourcecanbearatioofeitherthesystemclockfSYSortheinternalhighclockfH,

thefLIRCclocksourceortheexternalTCKnpin.Notethatsettingthesebitstothevalue101willselect

areservedclockinput,ineffectdisconnectingtheTMclocksource.TheTCKnpinclocksourceis

usedtoallowanexternalsignaltodrivetheTMasanexternalclocksourceorforeventcounting.

TM Interrupts

TheCompacttypeTMseachhavetwointernalinterrupts,oneforeachoftheinternalcomparatorA

orcomparatorP,whichgenerateaTMinterruptwhenacomparematchconditionoccurs.Whena

TMinterruptisgenerateditcanbeusedtoclearthecounterandalsotochangethestateoftheTM

outputpin.
