TheSPIinterfaceisoftenusedtocommunicatewithexternalperipheraldevicessuchassensors,

FlashorEEPROMmemorydevicesetc..OriginallydevelopedbyMotorola,thefourlineSPI

interfaceisasynchronousserialdatainterfacethathasarelativelysimplecommunicationprotocol

simplifyingtheprogrammingrequirementswhencommunicatingwithexternalhardwaredevices.

Thecommunicationisfullduplexandoperatesasaslave/mastertype,wherethedevicecanbe

eithermasterorslave.AlthoughtheSPIinterfacespecificationcancontrolmultipleslavedevices

fromasinglemaster,howeverthisdeviceisprovidedwithonlyoneSCSpin.Ifthemasterneedsto

controlmultipleslavedevicesfromasinglemaster,themastercanuseI/Opinstoselecttheslave

devices.

SPI Interface Operation

TheSPIinterfaceisafullduplexsynchronousserialdatalink.Itisafourlineinterfacewithpin

namesSDI,SDO,SCKandSCS.PinsSDIandSDOaretheSerialDataInputandSerialData

Outputlines,SCKistheSerialClocklineandSCSistheSlaveSelectline.AstheSPIinterfacepins

arepin-sharedwithnormalI/Opins,theSPIinterfacemustfirstbeenabledbysettingthecorrect

bitsintheSBCRandSPIRregisters.TheSPIcanbedisabledorenabledusingtheSPI_ENbitin

theSPIRregister.CommunicationbetweendevicesconnectedtotheSPIinterfaceiscarriedoutin

aslave/mastermodewithalldatatransferinitiationsbeingimplementedbythemaster.TheMaster

alsocontrolstheclocksignal.AsthedeviceonlycontainsasingleSCSpinonlyoneslavedevice

canbeutilized.

TheSCSpiniscontrolledbytheapplicationprogram,settheCSENbitto“1”toenabletheSCSpin

functionandcleartheCSENbitto“0”toplacetheSCSpinintoafloatingstate.
