Reset Functions
Therearefivewaysinwhichamicrocontrollerresetcanoccur,througheventsoccurringboth
internallyandexternally:
• Power-onReset
Themostfundamentalandunavoidableresetistheonethatoccursafterpowerisfirstappliedto
themicrocontroller.AswellasensuringthattheProgramMemorybeginsexecutionfromthefirst
memoryaddress,apower-onresetalsoensuresthatcertainotherregistersarepresettoknown
conditions.AlltheI/Oportandportcontrolregisterswillpowerupinahighconditionensuring
thatallpinswillbefirstsettoinputs.
AlthoughthemicrocontrollerhasaninternalRCresetfunction,iftheVDDpowersupplyrisetime
isnotfastenoughordoesnotstabilisequicklyatpower-on,theinternalresetfunctionmaybe
incapableofprovidingaproperresetoperation.Insuchcasesitisrecommendedthatanexternal
RCnetworkisconnectedtotheRESpin,whoseadditionaltimedelaywillensurethattheRES
pinremainslowforanextendedperiodtoallowthepowersupplytostabilise.Duringthistime
delay,normaloperationofthemicrocontrollerwillbeinhibited.AftertheRESlinereachesa
certainvoltagevalue,theresetdelaytimetRSTDisinvokedtoprovideanextradelaytimeafter
whichthemicrocontrollerwillbeginnormaloperation.TheabbreviationSSTinthefiguresstands
forSystemStart-upTimer.

• RESPinReset
FormostapplicationsaresistorconnectedbetweenVDDandtheRESpinandacapacitor
connectedbetweenVSSandtheRESpinwillprovideasuitableexternalresetcircuit.Any
wiringconnectedtotheRESpinshouldbekeptasshortaspossibletominimiseanystraynoise
interference.
