Oneofthemostfundamentalfunctionsinanymicrocontrollerdeviceistheabilitytocontroland

measuretime.ToimplementtimerelatedfunctionseachdeviceincludesseveralTimerModules,

abbreviatedtothenameTM.TheTMsaremulti-purposetimingunitsandservetoprovide

operationssuchasTimer/Counter,InputCapture,CompareMatchOutputandSinglePulseOutput

aswellasbeingthefunctionalunitforthegenerationofPWMsignals.EachoftheTMshas

eithermultipleinterrupts.TheadditionofinputandoutputpinsforeachTMensuresthatusersare

providedwithtimingunitswithawideandflexiblerangeoffeatures.

ThecommonfeaturesofthedifferentTMtypesaredescribedherewithmoredetailedinformation

providedintheindividualCompactandStandardTMsections.

Introduction

ThedevicecontainsfiveTMshavingareferencenameofTM0,TM1,TM2,TM3andTM5.Each

individualTMcanbecategorisedasacertaintype,namelyCompactTypeTM,four10-bitCTMand

one16-bitCTM.Themainfeaturesaresummarisedintheaccompanyingtable.

TM Function Summary

TM Operation

TMofferadiverserangeoffunctions,fromsimpletimingoperationstoPWMsignalgeneration.

ThekeytounderstandinghowtheTMoperatesistoseeitintermsofafreerunningcounterwhose

valueisthencomparedwiththevalueofpre-programmedinternalcomparators.Whenthefree

runningcounterhasthesamevalueasthepre-programmedcomparator,knownasacomparematch

situation,aTMinterruptsignalwillbegeneratedwhichcanclearthecounterandperhapsalso

changetheconditionoftheTMoutputpin.TheinternalTMcounterisdrivenbyauserselectable

clocksource,whichcanbeaninternalclockoranexternalpin.

TM Clock Source

TheclocksourcewhichdrivesthemaincounterineachTMcanoriginatefromvarioussources.

TheselectionoftherequiredclocksourceisimplementedusingtheTnCK2~TnCK0bitsintheTM

controlregisters.TheclocksourcecanbearatioofeitherthesystemclockfSYSortheinternalhigh

clockfH,thefTBCclocksourceortheexternalTCKnpin.Notethatsettingthesebitstothevalue101

willselectanundefinedclockinput,ineffectdisconnectingtheTMclocksource.TheTCKnpin

clocksourceisusedtoallowanexternalsignaltodrivetheTMasanexternalclocksourceorfor

eventcounting.

TM Interrupts

TheCompacttypeTMhastwointernalinterrupts,oneforeachoftheinternalcomparatorAor

comparatorP,whichgenerateaTMinterruptwhenacomparematchconditionoccurs.
